Chamonix: Eco-friendly habits to adopt in the valley
Chamonix: Eco-friendly habits to adopt in the valley
In the Mont Blanc massif, many associative, economic and political actors are acting on a daily basis to preserve nature and fight against climate change. Whether with transport, your consumption or leisure activities, you can also act at your level to preserve the environment!
Chamonix: what eco-friendly habits to adopt daily?
Whether you are passing through the valley or you live here, some every day actions can help to preserve the exceptional natural setting of the Mont Blanc massif.
So-called eco-friendly habits (also known as green habits) are easy to implement. Everyone can act in favour of the environment and participate in energy transition according to their possibilities.
Here are some best practices to adopt daily.
When getting around
- In town, for short trips, choose to walk, cycle or an electric scooter.
- Use public transport or carpooling.
- When driving, use eco-driving techniques.
Consumables
- Eat local as much as possible. Fruits and vegetables, honey, farm products… in the valley, many food products are accessible locally.
- Reduce your waste by avoiding overpackaged products and sorting your rubbish.
- Repair, donate or sell on items instead of throwing them away (read below).
When exploring nature
- While hiking, stay on the marked paths so as not to trample on the flora.
- Avoid swimming in high-altitude lakes: the ecosystem is extremely fragile.
- Be sure to respect wildlife and be as discreet as possible so as to not disturb wild animals.
- After a picnic, remember to pick up your waste!
Focus on Bocher's ‘Ressourcerie’
To give a second life to objects you no longer use, Bocher’s resale shop, known as the ‘ressourcerie’ in Les Houches, allows you to recycle items that are in working order.
Located next to the tip, the ‘ressourcerie’ accepts all kinds of objects that people want to get rid of (dishes, furniture, household appliances, trinkets...). These items, in good working order, are available to the public free of charge.
In 2019, its second year of existence, this service saved 60 tons of waste from being treated!
The ‘ressourcerie’ is open on Saturdays, from 9 am to 12.30 pm and from 2 pm to 4 pm, and on Wednesdays from 2 pm to 5 pm.
Many local initiatives
Across its news segment, the Chamonix Sotheby’s International Realty agency has also highlighted associations and local figures who are involved in preserving the environment. These include:
- The photographer Quentin Iglesis, mindful of the impact of climate change on the mountains
- Julien "Pica" Herry, mountaineer, snowboarder and high mountain guide, who gives a second life to ski equipment sent to Pakistan via his association Zom Connection
- Our partner, Alpine Ski Racing, committed to a “zero carbon” practice in the organisation of competitions
- The Cosmo Jazz Festival and the Grands Music Festival, both also committed to an eco-responsible approach to reduce their environmental impact
