Trail des Aiguilles Rouges in Chamonix: an adventure on a human scale
The Trail des Aiguilles Rouges (TAR) holds a special place in the heart of its many followers, as one of the essential sporting events of the valley, which is taking place on 25th September 2022. Discover the programme with Chamonix Sotheby’s International Realty.
Trail des Aiguilles Rouges: a unique competition in Chamonix
When it comes to racing, there is something for everyone in Chamonix! Alongside the titan races such as the Marathon or the UTMB, the Trail des Aiguilles Rouges (TAR) has been tracing it’s own path in the valley for over 15 years.
A competition on a human scale, the TAR holds a special place in Chamonix where a new edition is taking place on the weekend of 24th and 25th September 2022. Appreciated for its technicality, the TAR has been organised since 2007 in the Aiguilles Rouges massif in Chamonix, where it has earned a great reputation among enthusiasts.
Whether seasoned trail runners or newcomers to the discipline, several hundred racers will compete in the mountains and in the different races. There were 850 in 2021 on the two main races (TAR and P’tit TAR), not to mention the participants in the Mini TAR, reserved for younger racers.
Race Overview
Three races are offered to athletes, depending on their level and age (registrations are closed for TAR and P’tit TAR).
The TAR, the weekend’s main event
Open to female and male athletes born in 2002 or earlier, the TAR is a semi-autonomous race redesigned every year, using the hiking trails of the Aiguilles Rouges massif.
Its course takes place in a limited time over 54 km with 4,000 metres of positive elevation in a natural mountainous environment. The maximum number of participants is 650 racers.
The P’tit TAR, a more accessible route
The P’tit TAR 2022 is an autonomous trail race and involves a 16 km loop starting and finishing in Chamonix. The route is identical to the 2021 race and includes 300 metres of positive elevation. It is open to women and men born in and before 2002 (FFA categories "Espoir").
The Mini TAR – Tom’s Trophy, for younger athletes
Dedicated to the "cadets and juniors" FFA categories, the Mini TAR takes the racers on a technical 8 km route with 640 metres of positive elevation gain. The course has several common portions with the P’tit TAR.
